What exactly is llms.txt?

llms.txt is an emerging standard, analogous to robots.txt for search engines, that tells AI assistants what's on your site in structured Markdown. A file at /llms.txt gives any AI-powered tool a clean, machine-readable index of your content without having to parse messy HTML.

Will this work with ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini?

Yes. Project LLMs.txt produces the clean Markdown these tools read most easily, so when ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI assistants reach your site, they find a structured index instead of raw HTML. The llms.txt standard is still early, and no major AI company has formally committed to it yet, but the file costs nothing to publish and keeps your site ready as more tools adopt it.

Does it respect my SEO noindex settings?

Yes. If you've marked a page noindex or nofollow in Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress, AIOSEO, or Slim SEO, the plugin leaves it out of your llms.txt files automatically. Pages you keep out of search stay out of AI, with no extra setup.

Does it work with my page builder?

Yes. By default Project LLMs.txt reads your published content, which covers blocks, shortcodes, and shortcode-based builders like Divi and Visual Composer. For builders or theme sections that render their layout outside the editor, such as Elementor, switch Extraction Method to Full-page scrape in the plugin settings to load each page the way a browser does. ACF and custom fields are handled separately through Pro field mapping. WooCommerce products are also supported.

Does it send my content anywhere?

No. The plugin runs entirely on your server. It reads your WordPress database, generates the Markdown files, and writes them to your site. Nothing is sent to any external API. Your content stays yours.

What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

/llms.txt is the index. It lists your pages and posts with titles, URLs, and brief descriptions. /llms-full.txt goes further: it includes the complete Markdown content of every page, so AI assistants can read the full text rather than just your table of contents. Think of it as the difference between a library catalogue and the books themselves.

How is this different from an XML sitemap?

A sitemap tells crawlers which URLs exist. An llms.txt tells AI assistants what's actually on your site, in plain Markdown that they can read and reason about directly. Sitemaps are for crawlers that will eventually fetch and render each page. AI assistants often work from pre-processed text and benefit from a clean, structured summary they can consume in one request.
